2 Peter 2:7-9
7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,
Here's a quick paraphrase:
"If God rescued Lot, who grieved in his heart for the unrighteousness that he saw all around him, then God will rescue the godly from their trials, and will keep His promise to punish the unrighteous at the time of judgment."
It's been awhile since my last post, so we need to remember that the context here is false teachers. After we deal with that, we can then see if we can make application for ourselves regarding these verses.
Remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah? God dispatched two human-form angels to destroy these and the surrounding cities. Why? In Genesis 18:20, it says,
"Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave,
What is this outcry? It wasn't the outcry of the Sodomites, it was the outcry of the angels that were telling God how bad things were. I didn't make this up. The next verse says,
"I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry
that has come to me. And if not, I will know."
Don't let this verse trouble you. It's not that God can't see everything, but what we see here is a glimpse into how God uses the angels as messengers. But I digressed.
To sum up quickly, Abraham pleaded with God to spare the city if there were ten righteous people. Unfortunately, there were not even ten, but God showed compassion on Lot, and pulled him out. The angels tried to get his entire family out, but some decided not to go and even Lot's wife could not resist the warning not to look back at the city as they were making their exit and she was killed.
What's the point? This section is a warning to false teachers and hope for the righteous. To elaborate further; God will only tolerate so much sin before He executes judgment. In addition, if you take advantage of God's grace by presuming that God has "unlimited" patience, you face the same fate as those being judged.
What about us today? We are surrounded by a culture that celebrates wicked and perverse sin. Do you find yourself being "oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men?" In other words, are you sickened by the sin that you seen in the news, and on the TV and movies. What about the sin that you see around you and even in your own life? That's how the bible described Lot. If not, then you have allowed sin to become acceptable and perhaps even enjoyable. If this is you, then you need to repent! Turn away from sin, and follow hard after Christ and His righteousness. If you think that this country is far from where Sodom and Gomorrah was, I want you to read this passage in Romans and think about how this describes our country today.
